How a receiving server decides

Every inbound message is checked against three DNS records before a mailbox provider decides whether to deliver it, file it as spam, or reject it.

SPF

Is this server allowed to send for you?

A TXT record listing which servers may send mail for your domain. The receiver compares the connecting IP against it, resolving at most ten DNS lookups.

DKIM

Was the message altered in transit?

Your outbound server signs each message with a private key. The matching public key sits in DNS under a selector, and the signature survives forwarding.

DMARC

What should happen when those fail?

One record ties SPF and DKIM together and tells receivers to do nothing, quarantine, or reject. It also asks for daily reports on who is sending as you.
